Alumni
KGDC has graduated five seniors in the past four years. All of them received full-ride gymnastics scholarships at major NCAA Division I Colleges. Although we were sad to see them leave, and miss them terribly, we are very proud of all their accomplishments, both in gymnastics and in their lives.

Amanda Peterson

In 1995, Amanda Peterson graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School and decided to represent The Tigers of the University of Missouri on the gymnastics team.

Amanda began gymnastics in the fourth grade when she moved from Chicago to the Kansas City area. She was the USAG Kansas State All-Around Champion for seven years in a row at various levels. She qualified for the USAG Regional Championships several times, and was the only representative from the state of Kansas in the 1995 USAG Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships. She competed as a Tiger from 1995-1999, graduating from the University of Missouri in 1999.   Return to topReturn to top

Kara Charles

Kara Charles graduated from Blue Valley Northwest High School in 1997 and went on to attend North Carolina State University. She spent the summer of 1998 at home training at KGDC and working. As a member of The Wolfpack Team, she was freshman of the year in her conference in 1998 and helped her team qualify for the NCAA Nationals for the first time. While adjusting to the life of a college athlete, Kara has been training and studying hard, and is excited to represent the Wolfpack in the upcoming season.

Kara started gymnastics at the age of three. She trained from her childhood through adolescence with her goal being to receive a college scholarship at a Division I College. During her career at KGDC, she was the USAG Kansas State All-Around Champion three years in a row as a Level 10. She qualified for The USAG Regional Championships all three years, and the USAG Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships two out of those three years. In 1997, Kara finished 20th in the nation in the All-Around at the National Championships. She is exploring areas of study at NC State, but is leaning toward psychology or physical therapy.   Return to topReturn to top

Jennifer Gleissner

Shawnee Mission Northwest and KGDC lost a valuable student in 1997. Jennifer Gleissner graduated, leaving a High School State Championship and KGDC behind her.

During her three years at KGDC, Jennifer finished in the top three at the USAG Kansas State Championships in the All-Around, and qualified to the Regional Championships all three years. In 1996, she qualified to the USAG Level 10 National Championships in Atlanta, GA. An ankle injury in 1997 prevented her from competing at the USAG Regional Championships, so she concentrated on achieving her goal of attaining a gymnastics scholarship. In the spring, she signed with Western Michigan. In 1998, Jennifer tied her school record on balance beam with a 9.825 and placed third at the MAC Conference Championships. She is exploring her career goals and is interested in psychology at this time.   Return to topReturn to top

Melissa Peterson

Melissa Peterson graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1998. She attends the University of Michigan where she is a member of the 1999 second place NCAA Wolverine Gymnastics Team. She competed for the KGDC Twisters from 1995-1999, qualifying to the Junior Olympic Level 10Nationals every year. In 1998, she placed 12th All-Around in the nation and finished seventh on the Balance Beam. She was the Level 10 State All-Around Champion for the last four years as a Twister, and has qualified to the Region III Championships all four years as well. She will be missed at KGDC and will be an excellent representative for The Wolverines during her college career.   Return to topReturn to top

Audrey Mitchell

Audrey graduated from Blue Valley North High School in 1999 and is moving on to Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, where she is a member of the Gymnastics Team. She started her gymnastics career at age seven, beginning as a Level 5, and improving as the years passed through four years of Level 10 competition. In 1998, Audrey finished first on Vault and Floor, second on Beam and Bars, and second in the All-Around competition at the Kansas State Championships. From there, she qualified to the 1998 Region III Championships. Audrey has fulfilled her dream of achieving a college scholarship in gymnastics and we wish her the best of luck in her first year.
